 Strategic Review of Competencies

Successful improvement programs are not a “feel good” matter but have a clear focus on what is important to the business.The Strategic Review allows us to understand these business needs and how they relate to the competencies needed by your people and across the organisation. It also helps clarify the critical preconditions or barriers to the program’s success.

A Governance Structure for Sustaining Improvement

Companies often simply say that improvement is part of every manager’s job. However, in today’s highly competitive world, continual improvement is so critical to a company’s future that it needs special attention, a special governance structure. In the past this happened for example, with Quality Management Systems. Later when companies became familiar with this,quality systems simply became normal management. Today, major companies around the world have appointed specialists in improvement at high level in their organisations,

For example Operations Excellence Managers with roles on the leadership team.The role of a governance structure is to identify opportunities, investigate them and make recommendations to top management and to assist with developing competence across the organisation.

Broad Based Training

Broad based training of staff in improvement is made possible by the government funding and this creates has many other benefits. Staff learn the tools of improvement, put them in to practice and make improvements in many day to day activities to eliminate wastes and errors at the grass roots level.


The program allows you to identify those individuals who have the potential to become your key “Change Drivers” or “Change Agents”, if these people have not been identified already.These are the people who will reach out for the new and radically better ways of doing things in all areas.

The funding makes it possible for the training to cover a large percentage of total staff. We also use this to, at least partly, fund the cost of advanced training in Green and Black Belt Lean Six Sigma for your “Change Drivers”.

 Our Unique Approach to Certificate Training in Competitive Manufacturing

Lean Sigma Institute has integrated the modules of the National Certificate into a structure that is based on the powerful problem-solving methodology, DMAIC, (Define–Measure–Analyse–Improve–Control) that underpins the Six Sigma approach. This has advantages for both the company and for participants.

Participants learn both the specifics of the improvement tools but also how to put them together into a project methodology that enables them to tackle larger issues that require structured investigation.Everyone is trained in this “common language” for projects and improvement. People adopt a shared understanding of how to go about change and improvement and an acceptance of the need for it. This creates a fertile ground for developing a sustainable continual improvement culture.Participants receive a double qualification. A National Certificate in Competitive Systems and Practices and a Yellow Belt in Lean Six Sigma as recognised internationally through RABQSA. 

A Corps of Trained Lean Six Sigma “Change Drivers”

Improvement must take place at all levels in a company. Much national certificate training only addresses the lower levels but ignores the larger opportunities that often cross functions and departments and requires management input.

A corps of people with higher level skills and knowledge is needed to exploit these major improvement opportunities. Lean Six Sigma training to Green and Black Belt level is the internationally recognised approach to achieving this. 

Lean Sigma Institute provides competence building at both these levels in an integrated way. Our approach to National Certificate training creates the base for these people to proceed to the advanced training where this is suitable. The training is competence based in that Lean Sigma Institute (unique among providers of this training) mentors people through their early projects to ensure success.

Developing Critical Organisational Competence

Our research indicates that world class companies become that way through developing organisational competencies, such as an effective project management process, a culture of data based decision-making, people involvement and effective information processes.

Effective deployment of sustainable improvement depends on developing these critical organisational competencies and not just on one or two individuals acquiring skills.


While we work with your organisation, we actively liaise with senior management to assist the organisation in strengthening these critical sustainable success factors. This starts at the Strategic Review and continues throughout. We can suggest strategies to ensure these organisational competencies are assessed and strengthened and may include issues relating to leadership, culture, training strategy, projects and data.

Monitoring Progress to Identify and Remove Barriers

Identifying and overcoming barriers to achievement is an essential part of the path to sustainable continuous improvement.The Lean Sigma Institute is a team of experienced Lean Six Sigma Black and Master Black Belt practitioners that also have management and consulting backgrounds. Over the months of a typical program, and long after, we work with your organisation to make the competence building successful in the long term.

We understand what it takes to establish an improvement culture, the issues and barriers that have the potential to undermine sustainability. Identifying what those are and taking action to remove or minimise their impact is crucial but is often overlooked or ignored in normal training programs. 

Lean Sigma Institute specializes in facilitation, training and consulting on improvement. We work with an RTO to provide the administrative paperwork needed by the funding bodies.
